Numeric tables for the templates Template
When I originally wrote these pages, I didn't realize that the
template table could represent its own secrets. I guess that's my
engineer's past showing through!
Here are some indications which could clear things up (manybe).
The table above has two main secrets:
- it describes only half of the template (the other half is
symmetrical, of course)
- the heights are measure from an imaginary water line
(so, negative values are under the water)
As an example, we'll take the highlighted template from the table.
The first measure (left column) is supposed to be the distance from
the stern. This measure is not useful at all. Some templates fit
at distances far different. But the template show their use in estimating
the angles of the boards, and are very handy.
There are 5 pairs of values (5 columns), which describe 5 points
of the template. Maybe it's easiest to draw the template on a piece
of paper folded in two, using the fold as the vertical reference.
In the drawing, the 5 points are marked in grey boxes.
When cutting the paper (still folded) you'll get the complete
template without having to redraw the symmetric part of the form.
A few hints:
- When cutting the form from wood, the useful bit is the
external part!
- I decided to cut the templates horizontally at point 3. That
way I could work on both kayak halves at the same time.
- Marcar bien las plantillas, y si decide cortarlas en dos, marcar
ambas partes!
- It's not necessary to cut all templates. Particularly the ones
in front and behind the cockpit are useful as this is where the form
changes most rapidly.
