Tech datasheet of the GOES series

The GOES satellite program was developed by NASA in the US, mainly to provide meteorological imagery in a reduced time span. Once in orbit, the daily maintenance passes from NASA to NOAA. The system provides images from more than 60% of the earth's surface with only two satellites.

Each satellite measures about 2 meters diameter, and, with its solar panels extended, reaches 27 meters width. They weigh around 2200 kg. The main task, apart from acquisition of imagery, is to retransmit information of several ground stations around the world, and, as a bonus, they contain a monitoring and triangulation system for the international emergency frequencies.

These birds have some technical problema with an on-board system - possibly they cannot control their exact position (Eg. GOES 6 is currently drifting more than 10 degrees from the equator)
